سعادت حسن منٹو 11مئی 1912ء کو لدھیانہ کے قصبہ سمبرالہ کے ایک کشمیری گھرانے میں پیدا ہوئے۔ ان کے والد کا نام مولوی غلام حسین تھا اور وہ پیشہ سے جج تھے۔ منٹو ان کی دوسری بیوی کے بطن سے تھے۔ اور جب زمانہ منٹو کی تعلیم و تربیت کا تھا وہ ریٹائر ہو چکے تھے۔ مزاج میں سخت گیری تھی اس لئے منٹو کو باپ کا پیار نہیں ملا۔ منٹو بچپن میں شریر کھلندڑے اور تعلیم کی طرف سے بے پروا تھے میٹرک میں دو بار فیل ہونے کے بعد تھرڈ ڈویزن میں امتحان پاس کیا۔ وہ اردو میں فیل ہو جاتے تھے۔ باپ کی سخت گیری نے ان کے اندر بغاوت کا جذبہ پیدا کیا۔ یہ بغاوت صرف گھر والوں کے خلاف نہیں تھی بلکہ اس کے دائرہ میں زندگی کے تمام مسلمہ اصول آ گئے۔ جیسے انھوں نے فیصلہ کر لیا ہو کہ انھیں زندگی اپنی اور صرف اپنی شرائط پر جینی ہے۔
